Improve Your Circulation this Winter

Improve Your Circulation this Winter
February 1, 2026julierietzeHealth TipsHeart Health

Cold weather doesn’t just change the way we dress — it also affects how our bodies circulate blood. When temperatures drop, blood vessels naturally constrict to help conserve heat. That’s why fingers and toes can feel cold or stiff, and why aches or numbness may feel more noticeable in winter.

The good news? Gentle, regular movement is one of the best ways to support healthy circulation, even (and especially) during chilly months.

Here are a few easy ways to keep blood flowing this winter:

Keep moving — a little goes a long way
You don’t need intense workouts to help circulation. Short walks, light stretching, or a few minutes of movement every hour can help keep blood flowing and joints comfortable.

Stay warm where it counts
Hands, feet, ears, and noses are most affected by cold-related circulation changes. Wearing warm socks, gloves, a hat and scarf, and layered clothing helps your body stay comfortable and reduces stiffness.

Break up long periods of sitting
Cold weather often means more time indoors — and more sitting. Set a reminder to stand, stretch, or walk for a 5 minute “Movement Break” every hour.

Don’t forget hydration
Hydration supports blood volume and circulation year-round. Even in winter, sipping water or warm beverages can help your body function more smoothly.

Staying active in winter doesn’t have to be big or bold. Small, steady movement keeps your body warm, comfortable, and connected.
