Beat the Heat: Smart Tips for Exercising Safely This Summer

Staying active in the summer is great, but when the temperature climbs, a little planning goes a long way to keep you safe.
- Hydration is key:
Drink water before, during, and after activity. If you are out for more than an hour or sweating heavily, consider adding electrolytes (Gatorade, Powerade, or IV Hydration packets) to help your body absorb water more effectively. - Time it right:
Early morning or late evening are your best bets for avoiding peak heat. Midday sun can turn even a short walk into a serious risk. - Try to cool down quickly:
Options include: take a dip or swim in a pool or lake if you are close to a water source, put ice in a sealed baggie and tuck it in your waistband, pour water over your head, or purchase cooling towels to tuck under your hat or in your waistband or place around your neck. - Know the warning signs:
Headache, dizziness, nausea, or excessive sweating can be early signs of heat exhaustion. If you feel off, stop, cool down, and hydrate.
Gentle reminder: You don’t have to push hard to stay healthy. A shady walk, a swim, or light stretching indoors all count, especially when the temperature is high outside.
